Marking a new milestone beyond China and expanding the lineup of domestically manufactured electric vehicles
Cikarang, November 28, 2024 – PT SGMW Motor Indonesia (Wuling) on Wednesday (11/27) celebrated a significant milestone with the production of 160.000 units from its manufacturing facility in Cikarang, alongside the debut of the Cloud EV export to ASEAN markets. This achievement underscores Wuling’s strong commitment to supporting the development of Indonesia’s automotive industry, particularly in the field of new energy vehicles (EV). Since beginning operations in Indonesia seven years ago, Wuling has solidified its position as a trusted brand in the domestic market and a key player in the electric vehicle segment.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including H.E Mr. Lan Tianli (Governor of Guangxi), Saribua Siahaan (Director of Promotion for Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific at the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board), Mr. Lv Juncheng (President Director of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., Ltd.), Mr. Zhong Dezhi (Secretary-General of Guangxi People’s Government), Mr. Wei Ran (Director-General of Guangxi Foreign Affairs Office), Mr. Yang Chunting (Director-General of Guangxi Commerce Dept.), Mr. Wang Weibing (Director-General of Nanning Customs), Mr. Hou Gang (Mayor and Secretary of Party Group, Nanning Municipal People’s Government), as well as the management team of Wuling Indonesia.
“The milestone of 160,000 units reflects the dedicated efforts and global exploration by SGMW’s partners in pursuing the vision of ‘Building for the future and expanding to international markets.’ It is also a testament to the strong collaboration and high-level coordination between the Chinese and Indonesian governments as pioneers in the expansion of Chinese automotive companies abroad. SGMW is committed to a global transition toward electrification and digitalization. We will accelerate the enhancement of electrified product lines in Indonesia, establish an energy industry and service ecosystem, and ensure that the benefits of new energy vehicles are enjoyed by Indonesian consumers,” said Mr. Lv Juncheng.
Since commencing operations in July 2017, Wuling’s plant in Indonesia has produced nine vehicle lines, ranging from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, such as Confero, Cortez, Almaz, and Alvez, to hybrid models like the Almaz Hybrid. The lineup also includes electric vehicles (EVs), such as the Air ev, BinguoEV, and Cloud EV, along with low commercial vehicles (LCVs) like the Formo and Formo Max series. These diverse products are designed to meet consumer needs by combining advanced technology, high quality, and competitive pricing.
In its journey, Wuling has made a good contribution to the automotive industry in Indonesia with the support of high-quality manufacturing, an integrated supply chain, a network of 150 dealers, financing companies and the involvement of Indonesian labor.
Wuling’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its holistic approach to building an electric vehicle ecosystem. In addition to investing in EV production, Wuling actively supports the development of complementary infrastructure such as charging stations, engages local industry players in the supply chain, and provides workforce training to foster growth in the new energy industry.
“Through the transformation of ‘Electrification and Digitalization’ in Indonesia, we aim to establish a new automotive industrial chain in the country, positioning Wuling Indonesia as a hub for new energy vehicles serving Indonesia, ASEAN, and global markets while offering robust industrial support,” added Mr. Lv Juncheng.
Looking forward, Wuling aims to position Indonesia as a production hub for right-hand-drive vehicles serving ASEAN and international markets. With this strategy, Wuling plans to meet consumer demand in neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand, as well as other right-hand-drive markets. This initiative not only strengthens Wuling’s role in Indonesia’s automotive sector but also establishes Indonesia as a center for electric vehicle expansion.
“I also hope that PT SGMW Motor Indonesia continues to focus on the goal of ‘Rooted in Indonesia, reaching Southeast Asia,’ by consistently delivering best-selling vehicle models, expanding product lines, promoting local sourcing for key components such as batteries and drive motors, actively participating in the development of new energy vehicle standards, and exploring more right-hand-drive markets. In doing so, the company can contribute to the development of a shared future community between China and Indonesia, grounded in mutual benefit and shared growth,” remarked Mr. Yang Chunting
