Wuling’s Efforts to Support the EV Ecosystem in Indonesia
28 January, 2024
Electric vehicles in Indonesia are currently increasingly popular. Many conventional car users are starting to switch to electric cars. To further encourage the EV (Electronic Vehicle) ecosystem, of course, there needs to be a lot of commitment from various parties to make it happen.
The reason is that the development of electric cars must, of course, be related to the government, manufacturers, and their use. When the actors involved are in sync, the EV ecosystem in Indonesia will be realized more quickly.
To date, the EV or electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia has begun to develop rapidly. Many people are starting to switch to electric cars, and supporting facilities and infrastructure are increasingly being built in various places spread across many parts of Indonesia.
Indonesian EV Ecosystem
The EV ecosystem, or electric vehicle ecosystem, in Indonesia itself is currently developing quite well. The electric vehicle ecosystem includes several aspects, namely:
1. Charging Infrastructure
Until now, there have been many SPKLU (public electric vehicle charging stations) in various big cities. Of course, electric cars cannot be separated from charging infrastructure because this power is what can drive them.
Therefore, charging infrastructure is important, whether at SPKLU or at home. For charging at home, electric car customers will be assisted by PLN in providing for their needs.
PLN will make it easier to increase the electrical power of your residence so that it is easy to charge your electric car at home.
2. Electric Vehicle Models and Supply
There are already many models and supplies of electric vehicles in Indonesia from various world car manufacturers. In fact, one of these electric car manufacturers has built a factory to produce electric cars in Cikarang, West Java.
The manufacturer of this electric car is Wuling, which to date has produced two electric cars in Indonesia, namely the Wuling Air ev and BinguoEV. The presence of these two EV cars has been made in Indonesia and is a form of appreciation for advancing the nation’s economy.
3. Public Awareness and Acceptance
The emergence of electric cars on the roads is currently growing rapidly. Especially in big cities where there are lots of electric car users. In big cities, it is now very easy to find Wuling Air EVs passing on the streets.
4. Electric Vehicle Battery and Component Supply Chain
Until now, world-class electric car manufacturers have collaborated with various parties. So that the battery supply chain, which is one of the main components of electric cars, is easy to reach and facilitates after-sales.
5. Incentives and Supporting Policies from the Government
Since electric cars were released in Indonesia, the government itself has paid attention to providing incentives. This provision takes the form of policies provided to make it easier for electric car manufacturers to introduce environmentally friendly vehicles in Indonesia.
Not only manufacturers, but consumers of electric cars also get incentives that make the price of electric cars more affordable for many groups. Apart from that, the tax on electric cars is lighter than conventional cars.
How Wuling Supports the EV Ecosystem in Indonesia
Wuling Motors (Wuling) has, since April 2023, signed a memorandum of understanding to produce electric car batteries locally. Investment in the new KBLBB (Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle) project between PT SGMW Motor Indonesia and the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.
This localization of electric vehicle batteries is part of the strategic collaboration between Wuling and PT Gotion Green Energy Solutions Indonesia (Gotion Hi-Tech), which was previously inaugurated in November 2022.
Gotion Hi-Tech is a global company that invests in Indonesia in the field of manufacturing electric vehicle batteries. This collaboration allows Wuling to realize its commitment to produce electric vehicles with good local supply.
Apart from electric batteries, Wuling has currently produced two electric cars locally at its factory in Cikarang, West Java. After previously being successful with sales of the Wuling Air EV, Wuling is now launching its second electric car, namely the BinguoEV.
These two electric cars received a positive response, with the Air ev recording more than 13,000 unit sales since its launch in August 2022 until now and holding the title as the best-selling EV in Indonesia, plus the achievement of ordering more than 3,000 SPKs since its first appearance in mid-November 2023.
The launch of this second car further strengthens Wuling’s commitment to realizing the EV ecosystem in Indonesia. Moreover, these two electric cars have been produced locally.
Wuling Collaboration Expands Car Battery Charging
Apart from that, Wuling also officially started a strategic collaboration with three state-owned companies with plans to expand its electric vehicle charging network in Indonesia with fast charging facilities. Wuling’s easy home charging concept allows Wuling electric vehicles to be charged easily at home.
Then, in 2024, Wuling plans to collaborate with EV Power to provide fast charging facilities with IEC BB format at 100 points in various regions of Indonesia, thereby increasing the ease of charging and providing more comfort for customers when traveling long distances.
The efforts that have been made by Wuling to support the EV ecosystem in Indonesia are certainly worthy of appreciation. Moreover, a factory was established in Indonesia to produce electric cars locally.
Not only producing electric cars locally, Wuling also supports the presence of supporting facilities and infrastructure, such as charging for electric cars at various points in the country. Apart from also supporting the environmental care movement to become greener in the future.
