How to Extend Your Car’s Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK)

Vehicle Registration Certificate (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan or “STNK”) is an official document every car owner needs to acquire. To remain valid, STNK has to be extended every year. However, it is quite common for car owners to forget or even have no idea how to extend their STNK validity, even though it is indeed important given that STNK needs to be carried anytime and anywhere you drive.
Below, we provide some steps on how to renew your annual or five-year STNK. After reading this article, you can forget about asking for help from a broker, as the complete requirements are quite easy to prepare.
Conditions for STNK Extension
When you renew your car’s STNK, you must understand that there are two types of taxes applied to it. The first is the annual STNK tax and the second is the 5-year STNK tax. There is nothing different between the two, it’s just that once every five years, there will be a requirement for the STNK paper and the Motor Vehicle Number Certificate (Tanda Nomor Kendaraan Bermotor or “TNKB”). Annual STNK Extension Requirements
- Bring the original identification card (Kartu Tanda Pengenal or “KTP”) whose name is written on the BPKB and STNK
- Bring the original STNK which acts as a valid proof of vehicle ownership
- Prepare money in accordance with the vehicle taxes that must be paid
- You can STNK to find out exactly how much tax it costs for your vehicle
5-years STNK Extension Requirements
- Bring the original KTP whose name is written on the BPKB and STNK
- Bring the original STNK which acts as a valid proof of vehicle ownership
- Bring the original BPKB
- Bring the vehicle to be extended
- Check the frame and engine numbers
- Prepare money in accordance with the vehicle taxes that must be paid
When you come to a One-Stop Administration System (Sistem Administrasi Manunggal Satu Atap or “Samsat”) office to process an STNK extension, ensure that you have all the prerequisite documents with you.

How To Extend A Car STNK
After you prepare all the documents required, the next step is to start processing the STNK extension. You can directly go to a Samsat office or process it online via the E-Samsat application. The following are steps for extending your STNK.
Extending An STNK At A Samsat Office
- Fill out the registration form and prepare the required documents
- If you renew your 5-year STNK, then you have to conduct a free physical check of the vehicle
- After the validation is complete, prepare the files with the complete STNK extension form and other documents.
- Submit all files to the registration section and wait for you to be called
- After your name is called, you have to pay the vehicle tax as is printed on the tax sheet
- After payment, you will get two proof of payment sheets. The first sheet is for taking the vehicle license plate (if you make the 5-year extension), while the second sheet is for picking up the STNK which already has a new tax receipt printed on it
Extending An STNK via e-Samsat
To use this service, you simply need to visit the E-Samsat site according to your vehicle’s province of origin.

Fill out the vehicle data
Fill out complete and detailed vehicle data, so that no error occurs. You should also prepare the required documents for an STNK extension.
- City: Select the city of origin of the vehicle. If the license plate comes from Jakarta, then choose Jakarta
- Samsat: Select a Samsat office where your vehicle was first registered at
- Police number: Enter your police number (vehicle license plate number)
- Code: Write and enter the captcha code shown in the box.
- Finally, click “search”
If the steps are done correctly, you will then be directed to a new page that contains vehicle data and how much taxes and fines (if any) must be paid. Check your data again, if everything looks good, click on ‘Do you want to make a payment?’
2. Select the city where the tax note is to be collected
Even if you renew your STNK online, you must collect the tax note directly at a Samsat office. Simply fill out a form as proof of taking the tax note.
- City: Select the city of origin of the vehicle. If the license plate number comes from Jakarta, then choose Jakarta
- Samsat: Select a Samsat office where your vehicle was first registered at
- Bank: Choose which bank to make your online payments to
- Service: If you are going to use internet banking, please enter internet banking as your choice
- Pay code: Click “Submit Pay Code” to get a payment code, and then click print
3. Make a payment online
Payment can be made easily via ATM, internet banking, or M-Banking according to the amount of your vehicle tax.
- Open the Pay menu > Multi Payment > Select a samsat according to the place of origin of your vehicle
- Next, you must enter the payment code in the bottom column that was obtained from the e-Samsat
- Then click ‘continue’ to process the payment
- You will receive proof of payment, if you use internet banking or M-Banking, you must print out the proof to be exchanged later with a new vehicle tax note
Important note: this tax must be exchanged directly at the Samsat office within seven days of the printed out proof of payment.
4. Taking Tax Notes
After completing the process of the STNK online extension, the final step is to pick it up directly at the Samsat office of your choice. Bring along the proof of payment, old STNK, and original KTP to the payment counter. Afterward, you will receive two proof of payment sheets. The first sheet is for taking the vehicle license plate (if you are making an extension of the five-year STNK), while the second sheet is for taking the STNK which already has a new tax receipt printed on it.

Extend A Car STNK Through The National Samsat Online Apps
Besides coming directly to the Samsat office and using the E-Samsat, you can also take advantage of the National Samsat Online mobile application in a much easier and simpler way.
- Download the National Samsat Online application on your smartphone
- Do register
- Fill out the police number data (vehicle license plate number), ID number (Nomor Induk Kependudukan or “NIK”, and the last 5 digits of your car frame number
- After everything is submitted completely, you will receive a payment code that remains valid for 2 hours
- Make payment via bank or other payment methods, note that you will be charged with an administration fee of IDR 5,000
- You will receive E-TBPKB and E-STNK validation that remains valid up to 30 days after the issuing date
- TBPKB/SKPD and STNK validation stickers will be sent using an expedition to the address listed on the STNK
How To Extend A Car STNK via Drive-Thru
In addition to the methods mentioned above, you can also extend your vehicle registration through a Drive-Thru or better known as Mobile Samsat. However, this service is currently only available for an annual extension of the STNK, not the five-year one.
- Enter all the registration requirements at the first counter
- After your name is called, you need to simply pay the vehicle tax
- If the queue is not crowded, this process will take only 5 minutes
