Understanding Fog Lights
Fog lights are a type of car light that is used when crossing dark or foggy road conditions. This light is also called the clearance light or twilight light because it is only turned on when it starts to get dusk.
Fog lights are also often referred to as distance lights because they are used to determine the width of a vehicle. However, in general, fog lights are referred to as position lights. This lamp consists of two parts, namely at the front of the car which is called the front position lamp and the rear which is called the rear position lamp.
Car Fog Light Functions
The function of the fog lights on the car is very vital, especially if you drive in dark conditions. Some of the main functions of this fog lamp are:
1. Marks the Position of the Vehicle
Fog lights function as a vehicle position marker when the car passes on a dark or foggy path. By turning on the clearance light, your vehicle’s position will be more easily seen by vehicles on the opposite lane so that driving safety and security will be more guaranteed.
2. Indicates the Dimensions of the Vehicle
Fog lights are located at the front and rear of the vehicle which functions as a gauge for the width and length of the car. By installing fog lights, the size of your car will be more easily recognized by other vehicles. This is an important consideration when a vehicle wants to overtake in dark or fog conditions.
3. Indicates the Direction of Vehicle Speed
Using fog lights also serves to indicate the direction of the vehicle’s speed. The front position lamp is always white. Meanwhile, the tail lamp is red and will light up brighter when the car is in the braking position. With this sign, other vehicle drivers will more easily recognize your vehicle.
Fog Light Treatment
In order for the function of how to install car fog lights to be optimal, they need to be cared for properly. The first thing you need to do is diligently check the condition of the fog lamp at least once every 2-3 months.
In addition, when you buy a fog lamp in a new condition, the fog lamp rubber should be glued directly with a sealant to make it watertight. If water gets in, the fog lights will get moldy, which will make their performance not optimal.
Regulations for Using Fog Lights in Indonesia
Even though it has an important function, the use of car fog lights should not be done carelessly. This is because the use of these fog lights has been regulated in RI Government Regulation no. 55 of 2015, article 34.
The important points of the rules for using these fog lights are as follows:
- Motorized vehicles can use fog lights with a maximum number of two lights
- Fog lights color should be either white or yellow
- Fog lights should be Installed at a height of not more than 800 millimeters
- The outer edge of the illuminating surface of the lamp is not more than 400 millimeters
- Don’t dazzle other road users
